George Barnett is our Accounts Apprentice here at Kinect. He is currently studying Level 4 Accounting Technician. This is a highly respected accounting qualification in its own right but can lead on to further accounting qualifications depending on which direction the student wants to take their career.
The first job you have after leaving school can leave lasting impressions on you for life. An apprenticeship can be a perfect bridge between the expectations and norms of the school and working environments.
Everyone knows how good apprenticeships can be for a young adult starting their career, but who knew just how great they can be for their employers? Helping George start his career has made those around him consider their own professionalism and subject knowledge. Having to mentor an apprentice has made the whole team reflect on their own standards at work. I can hardly complain about something if I don’t adhere to those same expectations.
George has strong career aspirations, he can see his future as a bright and positive light ahead of him, taking leadership roles in various projects that are increasingly more complex and useful.
George has also taken on more duties outside of the Accounts Department. George is now a Fire Marshall, this added responsibility helps to develop his ability to multi task as well as being an important role within the scope of the company Health and Safety policy.
I asked George if he had anything to say about his apprenticeship and he told me that he loves learning on the job and then having the theory behind his actions reinforced in his weekly college classes. I have seen him develop from a school leaver at his interview, to an important team member, providing financial information to Senior Management, attending and contributing relevant and factual details at meetings.
